The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) is a joint initiative of all Australian governments and the insurance industry. Our mission is to drive down Australia's unacceptably high level of vehicle theft. This will benefit the economic and social wellbeing of the nation.
Australia's ageing car fleet, vehicle design inadequacies, a theft culture amongst some young people, lack of coordination between key agencies, as well as community apathy, all present barriers to tackling the problem.
Sustained theft reduction requires action across a broad range of disciplines. The NMVTRC provides a national focus for reform across government and industry. Our primary role is to coordinate and implement reform activities, including policy development and implementation, via productive relationships with all stakeholders. We also facilitate operational, on-the-ground responses to address perceived gaps in existing systems.
An independent incorporated, not-for-profit, association, the NMVTRC commenced operation in 1999 and is currently under term until the end of 2012.
