VOLUNTARY IMMOBILISATION: IMMOBILISE NOW!
Sub-program B: Reducing the Volume of Theft
Approach B1: Securing the Older Vehicle Fleet
Background
Australia’s high proportion
of older vehicles, which lack any form of adequate security, provide
would-be thieves with an abundance
of easy targets. The NMVTRC estimates
that there are currently more than 6 million vehicles on Australian
roads that can be stolen using nothing more sophisticated than a
coathanger and a screw driver.
The overwhelming evidence is that the
best way to protect older vehicles against theft is to fit
an Australian-Standards certified, after-market
engine immobiliser.
Consumers however remain reluctant to invest even a moderate sum to
secure their vehicle.
Work Program
Immobilise Now – 1999
to current
Since late 1999 the NMVTRC has run its voluntary Immobilise Now!
program to raise awareness of the high theft risk to older vehicles
and to encourage the fitting of Australian Standards approved engine
immobilisers (except in WA where a government mandated compulsory scheme
applies).

Next Steps
The NMVTRC will continue to run the
voluntary Immobilise Now! program in states and territories which do
not have a compulsory scheme in
place.
