ADR 25/02: IMMOBILISING THE FUTURE GENERATION OF OLDER VEHICLES

Sub-program B: Reducing the Volume of Theft

Approach B1: Securing the Older Vehicle Fleet

Background

The overwhelming evidence is that quality engine immobilisers provide the best way to protect vehicles against opportunistic theft.

Work Program

ADR 25/02, protecting future ‘older vehicles’ - 2001

The NMVTRC supported the introduction of Australian Design Rule (ADR) 25/02 in January 2001. ADR 25/02 made it mandatory for manufacturers to fit all new passenger vehicles with an engine immobiliser from July 2001, ensuring some protection for Australia’s future “older vehicle” fleet.

Next Steps

The NMVTRC will monitor the theft of light commercial vehicles which, though increasingly being marketed as passenger vehicles, are currently exempt from the immobilisation requirements of ADR 25/02.
