STREETWIZE YOUTH COMMUNICATIONS:
TARGETING A BROAD AUDIENCE
Sub-program B: Reducing the Volume of Theft
Approach B3: Reducing the Involvement of Young People in Vehicle
Theft
Background
Most of the young people who dabble
in vehicle theft are motivated by peer pressure – a powerful
motivator which can override the natural tendency to avoid involvement
in dangerous or illegal activities. The Streetwize Communication package
provides a broad educative approach to vehicle theft, targeting young
people who are tempted to become involved in this crime for the first
time.
Work Program
Launch of Youth Resources Package
The NMVTRC’s package of youth communication resources was developed
by Streetwize Communication, Australia’s leading developer and
producer of innovative information on social issues for young people.
The package aims to help those who are working with young people to
increase their own knowledge about car theft. It also offers a range
of activities to help young people understand the potential consequences
of stealing a car and develop skills to deal with situations where
they may be pressured by their peers to be involved in theft.
The kit comprises:
- the Spur of the Moment comic (also available separately
and in bulk), based on the original edition in 2000 by NRMA Insurance
Ltd
- a short animated film, Ride of Your Life, which can be
used as part of the Educators Kit or as a Community Service Announcement;
and
- an Educators Kit with background on vehicle theft and suggested
activities for young people.
The kit was launched in February 2002 and was supported by a cinema
and television release of the Ride of Your Life animation.
School Holiday Cinema Screenings 2004
The animation Ride of Your Life will be screened in cinemas
across all states and territories, on commercial television and on
Street Vision in major cities. The screenings will appear as community
service announcements during school holiday periods throughout 2004.
